Every day, millions of people undergo surgery without access to safe anaesthesia. In places where this care is taken for granted in the UK, the consequences can be devastating. In parts of Africa, anaesthesia-related death rates are as high as 1 in 150.

How it works

Delivered in partnership with the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WSFA), the SAFE programme supports the training of anaesthesia providers to deliver high-quality, safe care, even in very low-resource settings.

Funds raised by the Association’s charitable foundation enable SAFE courses to build sustainable training models that can be embedded within national health systems, strengthening local capacity for the long term.

SAFE uses a train-the-trainer model, ensuring long-term impact by embedding skills within national health systems.

Since the first SAFE course was delivered in Uganda in 2011, the programme has been delivered in collaboration with the Association of Anaesthetists, the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), and other partners.

SAFE courses are intensive and interactive, delivered in small groups and grounded in real-world clinical scenarios, with a strong focus on immediate impact in practice; ongoing monitoring and evaluation consistently show improvements in provider confidence, clinical competence, and patient safety.

 

So far, SAFE has:

Reached 50 countries

Developed 1,000+ local trainers

SAFE Africa: why it matters

Safe anaesthesia should not depend on where you live.

Across Africa and other low-resource settings, patients suffer or die unnecessarily due to a lack of trained anaesthesia providers. SAFE exists to close that gap through education that is practical, sustainable, and locally embedded.

SAFE delivers simple, effective training courses in obstetrics and paediatrics, equipping providers with the skills to deliver anaesthesia securely, even with limited equipment and resources.
