Summary
Proximal femoral fractures present unique challenges for anaesthetic departments, involving the peri-operative care of large numbers of older patients with significant co-morbidities. Despite guidance since the early 1990s concerning best practice management for these vulnerable patients, there remains considerable variation in models of peri-operative care, rehabilitation and orthogeriatric input.
These guidelines cover the management of proximal femoral fractures, including:
- Facilities and services required
- Pre-operative management
- Intra-operative management
- Postoperative management
- Outcomes, audit and research
