Who is the anaesthetist? Your guide to the medical specialty

Summary

Anaesthetists. The doctors in the hospital who, as a patient, you rarely see but are essential to so many. Some see our job as a dark art that no one quite understands, but we find it an incredibly rewarding career.

Anaesthetists make sure you do not feel discomfort or pain during your operation; manage your physiology and biochemistry while you are asleep; support your body when you are ill; and ease any post-surgery pain. We counsel you on your operation and make sure you are put at ease when you are most scared. We are the people called if you are in cardiac arrest, in a traumatic accident or are so sick you need a machine to breathe for you.

If you are thinking about becoming a doctor or are already at medical school and wondering which path to take, then this guide is for you.
