Therapy Dogs

Don't miss the opportunity to meet the 'Pets As Therapy' at Trainee Conference 2023! Come and meet the pets and volunteers on Friday 7 July from 10am.

Pets As Therapy (PAT) is a national charity that enhances the health and wellbeing of thousands of people in communities across the UK. We strive to ensure that everyone, no matter their circumstances, has access to the companionship of an animal.  Pets As Therapy visiting volunteers and their temperament-assessed pets bring comfort and companionship to people living in residential care who may feel isolated, confused and lonely. We support schools to help young people improve their literacy skills and encourage confidence and concentration in the classroom. Our hospital visits can aid a patient’s recovery and rehabilitation and help improve mental health and wellbeing.

The recognition that dogs can provide support to people in many different ways has led to an increase in the number of health and social care settings where dogs are present. Many care homes have encouraged regular visits from dogs and increasingly hospitals are introducing dogs into settings where they play a variety of roles.  When a PAT Dog visits a hospital ward, patients tell us that their stress levels reduce and it's a joy to interact with a pet, especially if they are missing their own family pet back home. Children who may be fearful of an operation or medical procedure get distracted by a comforting four-legged friend, which allows concerned parents to relax a little too. Visits by PAT Teams also boost the mental health of patients, as well as visitors and hospital staff.
