Resident pay issues survey: Association statement

Trainee pay issues survey: Association statement

Thank you to those trainee members who recently completed the joint Association of Anaesthetists and Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCOA) 2018-2019 survey of pay issues amongst anaesthetists in training. We are still in the process of analysing the results and comparing them with the survey conducted in 2017.

The 2017 survey highlighted widespread and varied issues with salary payments. As a result, the Association of Anaesthetists and the RCOA worked with NHS Employers to find solutions. Your anonymous responses were vital during our discussions with NHS Employers, who have committed to work with NHS hospitals and national healthcare bodies to address the issues we raised on your behalf. NHS Employers issued a response, available on their website.

However, looking at the most recent results we know there are still ongoing concerns. We are currently establishing the extent of the issues and how these compare to our previous survey. Our priority is to understand why problems persist, in order to challenge these more effectively. The results will form the basis of further discussions with key stakeholders and we anticipate they will lead to changes for the benefit of trainees.

This subject is of great importance – not only to our members but for all anaesthetic trainees – having a tangible impact on wellbeing. We are committed to finding practical solutions and making positive changes.
