SAFE Courses and Reports
SAFE obstetrics and SAFE paediatrics courses have been delivered across the world, in more than 30 countries. Courses have been delivered by individuals, as part of larger in-country projects and by program partners. Find out more below.

Botswana
A SAFE Obstetric anaesthesia course was held in Gaborone in 2024.
Burkina Faso
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Ouagadougou in 2016.
Burundi
A SAFE Obstretrics and SAFE paediatrics course was held in Bujumbura in 2024.
Cambodia
A SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia and Train the Trainers course was held in Phnom Penh in November 2022. Read the report by Dr Lowri Bowen.
Two SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia courses were held in Phnom Penh in 2019.
A SAFE Paediatric anaesthesia course was held in Phnom Penh in 2022.
Cameroon

Chad
The first SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in N’Djamena in 2019. Dr Jolene Moore reports.
Colombia
Drs Elizabeth Hood, William Gauntlett and Kate Grady undertook an Obstetric Anaesthesia Course in Medellin, Colombia in 2014. A SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was held in Medellin in 2019.
Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
A SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was run in Kinshasa in 2019.
Eswatini
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Ezulwini, Eswatini in 2016.
Ethiopia
A number of courses have been run in Ethiopia.
- Read the report from the first SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia Course held in Hawassa, Ethiopia in 2014. In 2017 and 2018 two courses were run in Bahir Dar, two in Mekele and one in Oromia. The Ethiopian Society of Anaesthesiologists and the Federal Ministry of Health have been successful in independently running courses in Oromia in 2019.
- The first SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was held in Jimma in 2016, with a further course in Addis Ababa in 2017.
- The first SAFE Operating Room course was run in Addis Ababa in 2018.
Fiji
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Suva, Fiji in 2019.
Ghana

Guatemala
The first SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was held in Guatemala City in 2017.
Guinea
Several SAFE Obstetric and SAFE paediatric Anaesthesia courses were run throughout 2018 and 2019.
Honduras

India
Numerous SAFE courses have been held in India.
- The first SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia Course to be run in India took place in Hyderabad in 2017. Further courses have been held in Hyderabad, Warangal and New Delhi in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
- SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia courses have been held in Bihar in 2017, Hyderabad and Mahabubnagar in 2018, Medchal, Rangareddy and Patna in 2019. Further courses are planned.
- SAFE Operating Room courses have been run in Patna, Mumbai and Manipal in 2019.
- The Indian Association of Paediatric Anaesthesiologists (IAPA) and the Association of Obstetric Anaesthesiologists (AOA) of India have been successful in running courses SAFE Obstetric and Paediatric courses independently.
Indonesia
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Jakarta in 2018.
Ivory Coast
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Abidjan in 2015.
Kenya
Several SAFE courses have been held in Kenya in 2016 and 2017. These include SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia courses in Nairobi, Eldoret, Isiolo and Mombasa, and SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia courses in Nairobi and Kakamega.
Liberia
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Liberia in 2012.
Madagascar
Drs Lindsey Arrick, Kate Holmes and James Leedham report on the Obstetric Anaesthesia Course in Antananarivo, Madagascar, 2015. SAFE Obstetric and Paediatric Anaesthesia courses have been held in Madagascar throughout 2016.
Malawi
SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia courses have been run in Blantyre in 2016 and Lilongwe in 2016, 2017 and 2018. A SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was run in Blantyre in 2016.
Marshall Islands
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Majuro in 2019.
Mongolia
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Ulan Bataar in 2018.
Mozambique
SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia courses were held in Mozambique in 2016 and 2019.
Myanmar
The first Obstetric Anaesthesia course is planned in Yangon in 2019.
Namibia
The first SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Windhoek in 2018, followed by the first SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course in 2019. Dr Jolene Moore reports on these here and here.
Nepal
SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia courses have run in Kathmandu in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Niger

Nigeria
The first SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Port Harcourt in 2018, followed by the first SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course in 2019. Dr Jolene Moore reports on these here and here. A further SAFE Obstetric anaesthesia course was held in Kaduna in 2020. Further courses are being run by the Nigerian Society of Anaesthesiologists (NSA), these have included SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia courses in Ife, Uvo and Abuja in 2019 and 2020. SAFE workshops have also been conducted at national conferences organised by the NSA.
Papua New Guinea
Several SAFE Paediatric and Obstetric anaesthesia courses have been run in PNG since 2015. Read about the SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia Course held in Papua New Guinea in 2017.
Republic of Congo
In 2014 an Obstetric Anaesthesia Course took place in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo. Dr Savini Wijesingha and Dr James Leedham report. Further courses were run in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire in January 2020 with more courses planned.
Rwanda
The first SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Rwanda in 2013. A further four courses were run between 2013 and 2016, and courses have been held throughout 2019. A SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was held in Kigale in 2018.
Samoa
A SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Apia in 2017.
Senegal
SAFE Obstetric and Paediatric Anaesthesia courses were held in 2019/2020 in Dakar, Ziguinchor and Tambacounda.
Sierra Leone
Drs Tom Daubeny and Aoife Fitzgerald report on the SAFE Obstetric Course held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, in 2016. A SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was held in 2018.
Somaliland
A SAFE obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia course was held in Somaliland in May 2023.
South Africa
SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia courses have been held in Johannesburg, Mbombela, Polokwane, Richard’s Bay and Newcastle in 2018 and 2019 and in Port Shepston in 2020.
Sudan
The first SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was held in Khartoum in 2018.
Tanzania
Several SAFE courses have been held in Tanzania.
Dr Emma Joynes reports from the first SAFE Obstetrics course held in Moshi, Tanzania in 2017. Since then, there have been SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia courses in Mwanza in 2017, in Dar Es Salaam, Bukoba and Kagera, in 2018, in Bukoba and Mbeya in 2019 and in Mbeya in 2020. SAFE Obstetric anaesthesia refresher courses and modular courses have also been piloted in Tanzania.
A SAFE Obstetrics anaesthesia course was held in Moshi in 2020.
The first SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia course was held in Dar Es Salaam in 2019.
The Gambia
The first SAFE Obstetric Anaesthesia course was held in Banjul in 2020.

United Kingdom
The SAFE Paediatrics UK course has been run in London and Cornwall in 2018 and 2019. The SAFE Training of Trainers course has run in London one to two times a year since 2016.
Zambia
Read more on the Obstetric Anaesthesia Course that ran in Lusaka, Zambia in 2014. Further Obstetric Anaesthesia courses have been held in Livingstone in 2014, Lusaka in 2015, and in Ndola in 2015 and 2016.
Two SAFE Paediatric Anaesthesia courses were held in Lusaka in 2016.
Zimbabwe
