About

This talk will explore anaesthesia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and examine the Association’s pivotal role in the academic and professional development of the profession.

The first recorded use of anaesthesia in the UK was in 1846. However, it was not until 1893 that the first group of anaesthetists, the Society of Anaesthetists, was formed to further education and training. This became the Section of Anaesthetists of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1908. However, this could not help the profession to meet all its aspirations, including the setting of a diploma examination. Thus, the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland was formed in 1932.

Speaker

Dr Robert Feneck is a retired Consultant Anaesthetist at St Thomas’ Hospital, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the department of Medical Education at Kings College London.
