SAFE Paediatrics course

SAFE Paediatrics course

SAFE Paediatrics course

The SAFE Paediatrics GB&I course consists of a series of theoretical workshops and hands-on practical sessions run over two days. The course was rolled out in 2019 and has now been run in 8 locations, covering England, Wales and Scotland. The course is aimed at anaesthetics consultants, SAS and trainees.

The main objectives are to:

  • Introduce / refresh key concepts of paediatric anaesthesia
  • Support regional networks
  • Deliver courses regionally, led by local specialist centres

SAFE Paediatrics covers common scenarios that UK anaesthetists encounter, particularly in non-specialist centres. It is sufficiently flexible however, that areas of specialist care are also addressed, such as the collapsed neonate or the child with cardiac disease presenting with a fracture. Care of the critically unwell child is taught in detail through separate recognition, resuscitation and transfer modules. For an example programme from the course click here>

Feedback from previous delegates:

"Probably the best course I’ve been on. Manual is excellent, well put together and useful for budding paeds anaesthetists as well as those with an interest."

"Fantastic for anaesthesia management and top tips rather than a resuscitation course. Non- threatening discussions. Fun!"

"Great course- good refresher of basic topics but also more speciality areas/ sick child. Spot on for working in DGH with occasional children. Good mix of DGH and tertiary centre faculty. Teaching delivered in a non-threatening way. Enjoyed the mix of lectures and workshops."

"Sitting round with experts teaching is rare and valuable time."

ODPs / Anaesthetic Nurses are also welcome to join the course as Observers (heavily subsidised fees apply):

"As an ODP attending this course, I found it a very good insight into the whole picture of paediatric care. Recommend this course to all of my ODP colleagues. I felt that I was encouraged to chip in and felt welcomed by all."
