Meet Dr Matthew Davies, President

Dr Matt Davies

Dr Matthew Davies is a consultant in anaesthesia and intensive care at North West Anglia NHS Trust. He has been the President of the Association of Anaesthetists since September 2022. His clinical interests are trauma and orthopaedic anaesthesia, preoperative preparation for surgery, human factors and ethics and law.

Why did you stand for election to board?

I wanted to find a way to influence and change clinical practice and to develop as a clinical leader.

Why did you decide to become an anaesthetist / doctor?

I have no idea really, I come from a very medical family so knew nothing else. It was medicine or the military. In the end I did both.

What do you like the most about your job?

Everyday is a different challenge and something unexpected always happens. That is not always for the best but keeps those “little grey cells” firing.

Who or what inspires you to do your best work?

For me it's a team game. A day where all members of the theatre or the ICU have the same focus and work together to produce the safest outcome for our patients. You know when everyone has had a good day and that makes you want to come back and do the same again the next time. It is a privilege to be a part of that effort. The challenge in today's climate is finding that reward is getting harder.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Passionate rugby fan (armchair only now), spending time on or looking at the sea and walking with my family and Labrador.
