Meet Emily Gibney. Emily works in ST7 anaesthesia at the Walton Centre. She is an elected member of the trainee committee. Emily’s clinical interests include neuroanaesthesia and medical education.
What does the Association Trainee Committee mean to you?
I’ve seen the excellent work done by the committee in the past and the support the Association has for anaesthetists, both in and out of training, so I feel very privileged to be able to contribute to that work.
What has most surprised you since joining the trainee committee?
I’ve only just been elected but I’ve been so impressed by how welcoming and supportive everyone has been! It has really helped me feel like I can get stuck in.
What would you like to achieve in your time on the trainee committee?
I’m keen to progress the work done to support trainees, particularly those struggling with aspects of training or struggling to get onto the training programme. I’m mostly just open to see where I can be most useful!
Why did you decide to become an anaesthetist/doctor?
I always loved science and after an undergraduate research degree I realised medicine was for me. I discovered my love for anaesthesia in the final year of medical school when I saw it was often the anaesthetist that got to do the fun bits in resus! Every anaesthetist I met was always keen to teach and share their love for the speciality and that really won me over.
What do you like most about your job?
I love being able to give a patient one to one attention, particularly when they are going through what is potentially a life changing day for them. I also love the team work and theatre environment. You also get to see physiology in action when you give different drugs and that appeals to my inner nerd.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love getting out into the fresh air and I’m trying to become a runner (a very slow runner!), I also love weight training, particularly after a busy day at work. I also have an ever increasing collection of Lego!
