Needlestick working party report

The Needlestick Working Party was formed to consider the testing of patients for Blood Borne Viruses (BBV) after needlestick and other occupational injuries. This was in light of legislative changes to the Human Tissue Act 2004 (HTA) and Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA), and the withdrawal of previous guidance from the General Medical Council (GMC). The report includes a set of recommendations plus:

  • Analysis of benefits and harms of blanket testing
  • Analysis of presumed consent
  • Analysis of non-consensual testing
  • Analysis of status quo
  • Analysis of next of kin assent/consent
  • Patient perspectives
