Mentoring Course

The mentor development programme develops participants' mentoring skills which can be used both in formal mentoring and in a range of leadership and clinical situations with staff, colleagues, and patients. It aims to develop participants’ abilities to enable and empower others rather than advise or offer solutions. Developing these skills can be both challenging and rewarding for those whose professional culture is that of expert helping.

There is a mixture of taught inputs, demonstration by tutors, small group skills practice, group discussions, and work in trios. Participants spend a significant proportion of time practising skills. They work with a facilitator, learning from the roles of mentor, mentee, and observer. Participants bring real issues to discuss in the mentee role: there is no ‘role playing’. Between sessions participants are encouraged to practice, and reflect on their experience, so that they feel prepared to act as mentors by the end of the programme. Practical and professional issues arising from mentoring are discussed and participants are encouraged to plan how they will take forward the skills back at work.

Participants are encouraged to offer mentoring during the trainee conference, being held in Leeds this year 6-7 July.

Learning Outcomes

• Conduct developmental conversations as appropriate e.g. appraisal, supervision, mentoring.
• Provide appropriate career support or refers trainee to an alternative effective source of career information.

Attendance is mandatory for all three days.
