Association statement on Junior Doctor strike action
Tuesday 21 February 2023
We are saddened that the current workforce situation in the NHS has led junior doctors to vote to strike. This decision is a last resort which they will have voted for with immense regret. Their decision rests on the failure of the pay review bodies and shines a light on a process that is broken and has had its independence questioned. Measures will be put in place to ensure patient safety on strike days, but we urge the government to act immediately to avert this strike and address the junior doctors’ concerns around pay and conditions and address the failings of the pay review process. If the government fails to act, the stark truth is that we risk losing a generation of junior doctors as they re-evaluate a career in UK medicine leading to a worsening of the medical workforce shortages.
