Junior doctor contract statement

Junior doctor contract statement

Following industrial action by trainees in 2016, the BMA Junior Doctor Committee (JDC) re-entered negotiations with the government and produced a revised junior doctor contract. In June 2019, BMA members voted (with an overwhelming majority) to accept the proposed changes.

We particularly welcome the contract’s emphasis on safe working patterns, rostering and the provision of rest facilities. These aspects align closely with our #FightFatigue campaign, which aims to highlight the detrimental effects of fatigue. The changes for those in less than full time (LTFT) training will also be of benefit to the many anaesthetists that train LTFT. We have summarised some key findings that may be of interest to anaesthetic trainees in the accompanying fact sheet.

"We particularly welcome the contract’s emphasis on safe working patterns, rostering and the provision of rest facilities."

Further information about the junior doctor contract can be found on the BMA website. The Association’s Trainee Committee maintains close ties to the BMA, with a member of their JDC co-opted onto our Committee.
