We have a vacancy for a lay Trustee to join our Board of Trustees. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a highly respected medical membership organisation and help shape the future of anaesthesia, influence patient safety and support anaesthetists throughout their careers.
You do not need medical or anaesthesia experience to apply. We value the skills, experience and perspectives that people from outside healthcare can bring. Your expertise could make a real difference to our governance, strategic thinking and decision-making.
With more than 10,000 members across Great Britain, Ireland and internationally, the Association is committed to safeguarding patients by educating, supporting and inspiring anaesthetists throughout their careers, enabling them to provide the best possible care in every healthcare setting.

The role
Lay trustees play an important role in strengthening the Association's governance, effectiveness and strategic direction. Bringing perspectives and expertise from beyond the anaesthesia profession, they provide independent insight, constructive challenge and specialist knowledge, helping to broaden Board discussions and strengthen decision-making.
As a lay trustee, you will:
- Help shape the Association's future direction
- Provide independent oversight and constructive challenge
- Bring specialist expertise and fresh perspectives
- Support effective governance and strategic decision-making
- Act as a trusted critical friend to the organisation
You will work alongside elected trustees who are practising anaesthetists, fellow lay trustees with expertise in finance and technology, and a highly experienced staff team.
Lay trustees also become members of the Association Council, which provides advice and support to the Board.
Who are we looking for?
We welcome applications from people with a broad range of skills and experience across the corporate, public and charity sectors.
We are particularly keen to hear from individuals who can bring diverse perspectives, broaden our reach and help us increase our impact. We especially welcome applications from people with expertise in:
- Fundraising
- Marketing and communications
- External affairs
Previous trustee experience is welcome but not essential. We value diversity of thought, background and lived experience, and are keen to hear from people who can bring new perspectives and constructive challenge to our work.
