Safe and effective use of AI in healthcare

The Association of Anaesthetists (Great Britain & Ireland) welcomes the MHRA’s findings that significant reform is needed to ensure the safe and effective use of AI in healthcare.

We are particularly encouraged by the emphasis on patient safety, stronger regulatory oversight and enhanced post-market surveillance. We reiterate our stance, however, that without effective investment in IT infrastructure, the potential gains of AI may be unrealised.

We look forward to working with the MHRA and others to ensure AI is implemented in a way that benefits patients, supports clinicians and maintains public trust.

Chief Executive, Nicky de Beer, said: “The Association is committed to supporting innovation within anaesthesia and is delighted to be funding three digital transformation projects this year. One of those is looking at setting the priorities for AI across the specialty and will ensure that our members’ voices are first and foremost in decisions that affect the way they practise. We will continue to lobby government for improvements to NHS IT infrastructure to ensure the benefits of AI and other technological advancements are realised.”
