About this programme

Your mentoring journey starts here

Whether you’re a consultant, SAS doctor or Resident doctor with an interest in mentoring or coaching, now is the time to invest in yourself, enrich your career, and contribute to a stronger, more compassionate NHS.

The GMC, Royal Colleges and the Association, among many other bodies, now consider that mentoring and coaching should be available to every clinician throughout their career.

The Association of Anaesthetists has been providing mentoring training since 2014 and following a recent tender exercise is delighted to work with the highly experienced training provider, Rebecca Viney Associates. This marks an exciting chapter in our commitment to developing supportive, connected, and resilient professionals within anaesthesia.

Whether you’re looking to give back, grow your leadership skills, or support your colleagues through the often-challenging NHS landscape, this programme is your opportunity to take the first step.

Why become a mentor/coach

In anaesthesia, where stakes are high for patient safety and the pace is continuous, having strong and skilled support is essential—not optional.

Previous participants tell us they have experienced
• Increased motivation and job satisfaction in the ever-changing NHS
• Satisfaction for playing a role in releasing potential, retaining the workforce and developing leadership
• Improved relationships with patients, colleagues and even family members
• Improved problem-solving abilities
• Reduced stress for mentees and mentors
• Better patient outcomes

If you would like to know more about Developmental Mentoring and Coaching please read this useful article by Dr Robert Self, Wellbeing Lead for the Association.

Learning objectives

By the end of this programme participants will:
• Understand what coaching and mentoring are and are not
• Have extended their existing knowledge and skills in mentoring and coaching
• Have a set of ‘tools’ to support their coaching and mentoring
• Have had a lot of practice
• Receive feedback on their own approach in a safe space
