Scottish Standing Committee elections

Scottish Standing Committee - elections

The Scottish Standing Committee (SSC) of the Association of Anaesthetists (the Association) has two vacancies for elected members to join the committee.

Nominees must be full members of the Association, resident in Scotland and in good standing, and should be proposed and seconded by other full members of the Association. Members are elected for a three-year term that can be renewed. The SSC has three meetings per year, usually held either in Perth or via videoconference and may also be requested to represent the SSC on other Association committees and working parties.

If multiple nominations are received an election will be run where ordinary and trainee members resident in Scotland shall be entitled to vote.

The SSC represents the Association in Scotland with over 800 members. As many of you will be aware the health political landscape can at times be quite different in Scotland to elsewhere in the UK such as in workforce planning, taxation and the very delivery of our health service.

The Departments and theatre suite environments we work in are evolving and in recent years the SSC have been involved with matters such as the Health and Care (Staffing) (Scotland) Act and raising wellbeing issues with the CMO Scotland alongside colleagues from the RCoA. Geographical tax variation and pension taxes are now affecting many more members than previously, another area of attention for the SSC.

Education and wellbeing will always be central to the Association and the SSC delivers educational meetings both as standalone and in partnership with the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists. Raising wellbeing issues through the fight fatigue campaign and awareness of suicide and mental health issues amongst colleagues is further important and relevant work of the SSC.
