How can art help doctors treat patients and better understand their pain? Can expression through art help clinicians process their encounters with patients? This Mental Health Awarness Week, hear from pain medicine and anaesthesia consultant Dr Liza Tharakan, doctor and artist Dr Minna Chang and the Association’s Wellbeing Advocate of the Year Award winner Dr Saumitra Mishra as they discuss the healing power of art.

Dr Liza Tharakan: Creative Arts in Chronic Pain - our experience in the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

Dr Minna Chang: The webinar explores how art in healthcare can deepen understanding of patients' experiences beyong clinical symptoms. Drawing on real patient experiences, it highlights how visual art can help express complex emotions, improve communication, reduce isolation and fosters more empathetic and holistic patient-centred care.

Minna is a FY2 doctor in London, who enjoys incorporating art in her work to reflect and raise awareness of important issues in medicine, experimenting with various acrylic styles to explore themes of illness, healing, vulnerability and connection.

Dr Saumitra Mishra: Art for wellbeing. A journey engaging Trust employees with arts and crafts, through free community sessions and hosting an in-hospital summer art exhibition open to all staff. Tips on how to best engage stakeholders and cultivate a change in workplace culutre.

Sumitra is an anaesthetist currently based in the West Midlands. His project was across University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. He is actively involved in grassroot wellbeing projects to help improve the experience of working within the NHS.
