So, the next time you're considering attending a CPD meeting, remember the difference that Quality Assurance can make. Choose the Association of Anaesthetists for education that's truly worth it.

Our Quality Assurance standards and processes

Our processes ensure high quality learning outcomes across the full range of our educational output, delivering delegate satisfaction and help to further enhance the reputation of the Association.

Currently, we have the following Quality Standards for Association education/training in place, which can be seen in full in the QA policy and procedure manual. In summary, our Quality Standards cover the areas below:

  • Where relevant, each activity will have a maximum of 5 learning objectives set
  • Programmes for events will be reviewed and approved in advance
  • The mix of educational topics will be reviewed
  • Presenter performance will be reviewed by delegates and a QA person
  • A database of Association faculty will be maintained and used for planning
  • Feedback to speakers is delivered, normally within six weeks.
  • A good mix of educational methods will be used
  • Promotion of reflective learning will be carried out
  • Programmes for events will be reviewed and approved in advance

How we ensure we meet the standards

In order to meet the standards above, we carry out these actions:

  • We gather evaluation feedback and share with speakers, including whether learning objectives have been met
  • Representatives of the Education Committee oversee the planning of events
  • A QA assessor reviews either a live event, or a recording
  • QA assessors will also further scrutinise any lectures that have been videoed for use online
  • Once a year the Association education committee and education team will conduct a quality audit/review and self-assessment/appraisal exercise to identify areas for improvement.
  • Once a year the education committee will review the education needs of different interest groups and consider whether new education activities should be developed to meet these.
  • An annual report is produced detailing how well we have managed to meet the standards listed above, and highlighting any points for improvement.
  • A pdf summarising the findings of the last report is on this page

Our Quality Assurance Assessors

We recruit Quality Assurance assessors from the membership and train them to Quality Assure our educational videos before they are released. They also provide quality assurance for our webinar, seminar and Core Topics programmes:

  • Members of the Association who are recruited as Quality Assurance Assessors have a good understanding of the Association’s culture, values, and practices. Training them is more cost-effective than hiring consultants.
  • Involving members of the Association in Quality Assurance activities can increase engagement and a sense of ownership among members.
  • Training members of the Association to carry out Quality Assurance can build capacity within the Association. This can enable the Association to become more self-sufficient in managing Quality Assurance activities.
