About this webinar

A career as a SAS Anaesthetist should be filled with possibility and opportunity, and with the potential to achieve your career goals.
This series of webinars are targeted towards any current Specialty Doctor Anaesthetists looking to see how they can develop within a SAS career, and any medical managers looking to see how they might maximise the potential of their SAS team members. They may also be useful to anyone considering becoming a SAS doctor and wondering about the routes such a career might take, and the destinations they might lead to.
This is the third webinar in this series, covering progression to becoming a Specialist Anaesthetist. It will provide insights into the history of the role, the eligibility requirements of the new senior SAS contract, and how you might demonstrate that you meet them, in order to progress.

Organiser: Dr Rob Fleming
Chair: Dr Nilofer Ahmed

Programme
Negotiating a new contract - the history of the Specialist role - Dr Amit Kochhar
Associate Specialist in Ear Nose and Throat surgery, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.  Former Chair, and lead negotiator at the BMA SAS committee

This talk will feature insights into the history of how the Specialist contract came to exist, and anecdotes relating to negotiating a new senior SAS role, after the closure of the Associate Specialist role in 2008.

What does “autonomy” mean anyway? - Dr Kirstin May
Associate Specialist Anaesthetist, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
SAS committee member, Association of Anaesthetists, and former elected Council member and SAS committee chair, Royal College of Anaesthetists

This talk will cover current thinking on levels of supervision, including the national standard which defines adequate supervision. It will also cover asking for help as an autonomous doctor.

The Specialist role - a clinical director’s perspective - Dr Chris Mowatt
Consultant Anaesthetist, and Clinical Director for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Former elected Board member and Education committee chair, Association of Anaesthetists

This talk will focus around the workforce arguments for the creation of Specialists, and the need to support the career progression of every anaesthetist, from the perspective of a medical manager.

How to have an “alternative career” - personal experiences of becoming a Specialist - Dr Rob Fleming
Specialist Anaesthetist, Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Honorary Membership Secretary and former SAS committee chair, Association of Anaesthetists

This talk will include personal experiences of meeting the requirements of the Specialist Generic Capabilities Framework, and how to convince your employer to support your progression.
