About
This creative workshop led by artist Sofie Layton will explore what makes us unique, and it will consider how these unique and diverse differences have been overlooked by our medical text books for centuries.
Participants will be taught how to emboss an organ or body part that has been printed onto aluminium or copper. Through the embossing process we will re-envisage familiar organs an body parts, drawing on the votive practice of making an offering as a focus to challenge and change the status quo. In doing this, how might we begin to think differently about the uniqueness of different racial groups?Meet the artist
Sofie Layton is an artist whose practice explores the creative interface between the patient and the scientific/clinical landscape. Her work includes installations such as “Bedside Manners” created at Evelina Children’s hospital 2012 and “Making the Invisible Visible” at Great Ormond Street Hospital (2015-2016). “The Heart of the Matter” (2016-2018) was a national public engagement project and exhibition which explored the medical, experiential and poetic dimensions of the heart – funded by the Wellcome Trust , Arts Council England and The Blavatnik Family Foundation.
During the pandemic, Sofie developed ‘Ensnared' with Neuroscientist Anna Kuppuswamy and research participants at the Wellcome Neuro-imaging Centre; exploring the effects of long term fatigue on post stroke patients.
Sofie is in receipt of a LAHP scholarship and is currently pursuing a research by practice PhD at the Royal College of Art, which focuses on the untold maternal narratives.
