Cardiac Anaesthesia: The early years
This talk is the first in a series commemorating the 75th anniversary of Anaesthesia, the journal of the Association of Anaesthetists.
In September 1947 Alfred Blalock, the surgical pioneer who developed the ‘blue baby operation’ visited England and operated successfully on 10 patients at Guys Hospital. From that time the era of cardiac surgery in the UK began. Join us on this journey through the early years of cardiac anaesthesia as we follow the development of the specialty from 1947 to 1959, including the early development of cardiopulmonary bypass, and some biographical notes on the key players.
About the speaker
Dr Rob Feneck retired from clinical practice in 2014, having been a cardiothoracic anaesthetist since 1981, initially at the London Chest Hospital and latterly at St Thomas’ Hospital. He retired from academic practice at Kings College, London in 2016. He is currently a volunteer with the Anaesthesia Heritage Centre and a student of the History of Medicine.
He was formerly Chairman of the Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists (ACTA), President of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists (EACTA), and President of the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland – the only person to have held all three positions.
He was elected Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in 2008.
