About this seminar

This will be the twelfth in the successful series of seminars on the management of the surgical patient with diabetes hosted by the The Association of Anaesthetists. The programme includes talks on all aspects of care of the patient with diabetes, to promote safer surgery for this group of patients who represent up to 10% of our patient population. Amongst other things, delegates will gain an understanding on how drugs for diabetes work, how these drugs can be safely manipulated during surgery; pitfalls of the VRIII; and current/future developments. Diabetes mellitus is becoming a global epidemic. The drugs used to treat diabetes have changed dramatically in the last 20 years. The surgical patient with diabetes is becoming more common, and diabetes is a risk factor for a worse surgical outcome. It is now becoming increasingly appreciated that the surgical patient with diabetes  has modifiable risk factors as well as non modifiable.
